Beyond The Data: Authenticity in Every Word

An isiXhosa recorder reflects on identity, self-expression, and why preserving indigenous languages matters. Busisiwe Madikane shares her experience contributing to Africa Next Voices.

Discovering the power of natural, authentic self-expression.

At Way With Words, we believe that language is more than communication. Language is identity, heritage and a path to self-discovery. As technology advances, we are committed to preserving indigenous languages and ensuring every voice, every word, is heard authentically. Below are the echoes of one of our isiXhosa recorders, Busisiwe Madikane.

Growth Through Words

For Busisiwe, our African Next Voices (ANV) project acted as the groundwork for a deeply personal experience — one that built a connection between who she is and how she could relay this with clarity. She reflects on the value of this, sharing:

“The project challenged me to think deeply, choose my words carefully, and share ideas that truly represented who I am.”

What may have begun as participation soon became a moving transformation. Speaking with intention and thought strengthened not only her communication skills, but her sense of self. As the project progressed, she noticed measurable growth in how she expressed herself. Her contributions were not only meaningful to the future of language technology, but also to the personal path she began to walk — and seeing that growth unfold was, in her words, “really fulfilling.”

Made in the Image of Language

With each step in the project, Busisiwe became more aware of the depth of her words. Through reflection, she shares:

“The project helped me connect more deeply with myself and realise how much my words can shape how I think, feel, and relate to others.”

For Busisiwe, expressing herself clearly is a form of self-respect and personal growth. The more intentional she became with her language, the more confident and grounded she felt. In those moments of recording, she wasn’t just speaking — she was sharing something personal. isiXhosa became a mirror, reflecting who she is without the need for translation. Through her home language, she could show up naturally and authentically, allowing her identity to surface with honesty and ease.

The Emotional Depth of isiXhosa

When asked if using her home language brought forward parts of herself that might remain hidden in other languages, Busisiwe responded:

“Yes… There is a comfort and emotional depth in speaking isiXhosa that I do not always experience in other languages.”

She describes isiXhosa as having layered meanings tied to history and community values. There are culturally rich expressions that lose their value if translated — a reminder that language goes far beyond vocabulary. Emotion, tone and rhythm flow more sincerely when isiXhosa is faithfully spoken, and this gave Busisiwe the freedom to share her lived experiences, heritage and sense of belonging through an untainted lens.

Her participation in ANV reassured her that isiXhosa would be recognised and valued in the digital world — as it should be.

Commitment and Cultural Responsibility

Like many meaningful journeys, the process was not without its challenges. Staying consistently focused and balancing everything while giving her best effort required discipline. Yet finishing the recordings, even amid distractions, became a powerful act of commitment. Completing the project reminded her that preserving culture requires intention and effort.

Busisiwe sees her participation as more than contribution. She views it as cultural responsibility:

“Preserving and promoting our language is important, especially in a world where global languages dominate.”

Being part of a project that values indigenous languages also changed how she sees her own voice. It reminded her that it matters, and that it deserves to be heard.

Looking Ahead

The significance of ANV for Busisiwe remains clear: pride. Pride in her home language. Pride in cultural preservation. Pride in her growth. Pride in her voice.

“It is a meaningful experience that encourages pride in our language and culture.”

Her willingness to participate again and recommend a project like ANV to others shines through — and that sentiment captures the heart of this initiative: community voices shape the technologies of tomorrow.

Reflections

Behind every voice is a story — one that can only be heard through authentic expression — and Way With Words has a clear goal in providing the spaces for this. This is where we protect identity, affirm self-growth and encourage self-expression. Every recording, every voice, every word contributes to a future where people interact with technology with confidence, pride and validity.

We are deeply grateful to Busisiwe Madikane for lending her voice to ANV and for sharing her reflections with us.
