Beyond the Data: Every Voice Carries More Than Words
A recorder's reflection on contributing to South African language technology. Lenepa Molaoa shares what it meant to preserve seSotho through our African Next Voices project.
Here at Way With Words, it has always been our belief that language is more than communication. Language carries identity, history and belonging. Being in a world where technology thrives, it is our mission to preserve indigenous languages as well as ensure cultural preservation and inclusion in digital systems. One of our seSotho recorders, Lenepa Molaoa, shares in this sentiment.
Preserving Language, Preserving Identity
A Voice That Truly Mattered
A sense of pride surfaced for Molaoa at the thought of preserving South African languages through our African Next Voices (ANV) project. Through an initiative which supports culture, education and digital inclusion, he remembered the impact that his voice can make.
The project stood as more than reading and responding to prompts. It reinforced the power language has in shaping identity. For Molaoa, ANV played a role in him speaking with clarity and confidence, making the experience both culturally meaningful and personally empowering:
“Being part of something that supports culture and future AI training made me feel like my voice truly mattered.”
In a digital era where dominant global languages often overshadow local ones, projects like this affirm that every language deserves space, recognition, and technological inclusion.
Building for Future Generations
Molaoa voices his proactive mindset by stating that there is affirmation in knowing that his participation helps to build a valuable dataset, one that may benefit future generations. When asked what he hoped a child 20 years from now would be feeling when using technology shaped by his contribution, he said:
“I hope they feel included, confident, and proud of their identity.”
He longs for a future where technology understands seSotho and his cultural heritage naturally. His voice has laid the foundation for digital inclusivity and creating spaces where systems can be adapted to represent culture in full authenticity. ANV has opened the door for seSotho and corresponding communities to be acknowledged, respected and valued in the digital world.
Why Digital Preservation Matters
Developing language technology for African languages means cultural recognition and equality. It plays an integral role in ensuring the continuity and relevance of individual languages, and provides speakers with a sense of dignity.
If our focus shifts from preserving languages, Molaoa says: “We would lose cultural identity, history, and the unique way communities communicate and express themselves. Without digital preservation, future generations may struggle to connect with their roots.”
Rightfully so, everyone deserves to know every single path that makes them who they are. With the weight language carries in traditions, knowledge and values, linguistic identity only aligns with his thoughts.
A Responsibility in Cultural Inclusivity
Molaoa viewed his participation in ANV not only as a task, but as a responsibility:
“Participating in this project allowed me to play a small but meaningful role in supporting linguistic diversity and technological inclusivity.”
His desire remains that his culture proceeds to be visible and accessible for generations to come.
Though facing some personal and environmental challenges while recording, Molaoa persevered with a goal in mind: “Despite distractions, I understood the importance of consistency and dedication in projects that support long-term cultural preservation. It reminded me that meaningful contributions often require commitment and patience.” We commend his determination. Molaoa perfectly embodies that the little things we do now cause greater ripples toward the future.
Looking Ahead
When asked if he would participate in a similar project in future or recommend it to others, Molaoa’s response remained positive:
“Yes… I believe projects like this create awareness about the importance of language preservation while also allowing individuals to contribute positively to technological development.”
That sentiment captures the heart of this initiative: community voices shape the technologies of tomorrow.
Reflections
Language preservation in the digital age is not only about safeguarding words. Way With Words has a clear goal through language projects. This is where we protect identity, ensure inclusion, and affirm dignity. Every recording, every phrase, every voice contributes to a future where people can interact with technology in their own language, with confidence and pride.
By working together, we are not only building datasets — we are building belonging. This is where speech meets purpose.
